The 'House Project' brief aimed to disrupt the conventional features of a typical suburbam family home through a series of radical incisions. The goal was to
uncover possibilities within the transformed space to accommodate the anticipated turnover of occupants. I approached these interventions as a way to encourage creative behaviour, foster
a connection with nature within the home, enable a more fluid relationship between domestic programs, and craft versatile spaces capable of adapting to future change.
The design process began with an exhaustive cycle of iteration, involving numerous tracings and physical models. The implemented incisions, although highly intrusive, created a unique, compositional circulation that
allowed the natural environment to push deeper into the home. I believe that this approach created an environment that would be conducive to the occupants creative pursuits and well-being.
This was my first University architecture studio, and ultimately, it taught me the difference between what makes an artist and what makes a designer.
As a songwriter, it was most natural for me to lead with my intuition without having to consider who the 'product' was for, because ultimately I didn't care, and it was purely about self expression to me. Design is not simply about self expression and intuition,
but rather a process of problem solving to accomodate for the user(s) with their needs at the forefront of every problem. It was a difficult lesson to learn, as it completely uprooted the way I approached things creatively, but in the end it gave my creative process
more depth, rigour and strength.
